At one time, and from a very wide river bed, this river was born of the source called Quadare (a small distance from the coast) that is, Caldare, which bubbles up from the ground.

The river has very cold waters, about 12° C, probably because of the melting snows from Etna. You find the papyrus, near the Quadare source, unique in Sicily together with that of the Ciane of Siracusa.

The presence of migratory birds is spectacular, among them herons, teal woodcock, white storks, cranes, black kites, mallards and many others

Among the aquatic species are the sedentary moorhen and the water rail.
